LSG Report on Haiti Relief
Over the last six months Lutheran Services of Georgia has helped a number
of Haitian evacuees who arrived in Atlanta for medical assistance for
injuries sustained in the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti on
January 12, 2010. LSG has worked in partnership with Refugee Resettlement
and Immigration Services of Atlanta (RRISA) to provide emotional,
psychological and appropriate spiritual aid to these evacuees. Funding to
support LSG's relief efforts has come from the ELCA, LC-MS World Relief and
Human Care, and individual donors.
Here's the story of one of our young evacuees:
Darlyne came to Atlanta on February 5 accompanied by her mother. She
sustained a compound fracture of the left leg after being buried under a
mound of rubble for 12 hours. She has had multiple surgeries to repair the
injuries to her leg. Despite being in agonizing pain, she remains in good
spirits and is optimistic about her recovery. On May 17, Darlyne underwent
another surgery to her leg and she is recovering well. She says that she is
blessed to be alive and she is grateful for the services she is currently
receiving.
It will be many, many more months before Darlyne and other evacuees like
her can return home. During this time, calling cards have been a lifeline
for them to stay in touch with family and friends who are still in Haiti,
especially for the evacuees who are here with no companions, and we have an
ongoing need for donations of these cards. Contact Lorraine Dorough at
678-686-9613 if you would like more information on ways to help our Haitian
evacuees.
Refugee Families Need Your Help
Refugee arrivals are increasing and we need your help to serve them.
Congregations are needed to co-sponsor refugee families and assist them in
adjusting to their new life in the United States. Duties of sponsorship can
be tailored to the availability and resources of the congregational
volunteers and the needs of the refugee family.
Immediate Needs: Co-sponsors for large families; washer/dryers; summer
tutors to work with individual children. If you would like to help,
please contact Melanie Johnson, Volunteer Coordinator for Refugee Services,
at 678-686-9619 or mjohnson@lsga.org.
Thanks!
